When I was seven years old I realized that I could not see the chalkboard. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. I sharpened my pencil a lot! A neighbor told my mom that I needed an eye exam. I was furious. I remember hiding under the bed. I remember my dad pulling my feet as I desperately held on to the leg of the bed. He won. I remember having the choice, we lived on a military base, of a pink or blue cat eye frames! Yuck! On the drive home, I was amazed. The trees had leaves and I could see the mountains. My glasses were very thick and I got my first contacts at 14. That was life changing for me.
In college, I wanted to do research in biology. After changing cages for 2000 mice and growing skin cells in a research lab, I decided that my true love was working with people. At my yearly eye exam, I had a revelation, “I want to be an eye doctor”! I signed up for optometry school and have loved it ever since.
I grew up as a military brat but I have always considered Colorado home. I currently live in Erie. I have two wonderful daughters. I love singing and long walks with my dog (Yes, the neighbors will tell you that I do both at the same time). I grow a mean tomato and don’t miss a Bronco game.
